Equal Pay Day falls on November 1
Taking into account the days already worked in 2023, women in Slovakia will work for free from November 1 until the end of the year.
"In other words, this means that for every €1 earned by men, women receive only 83 cents," said the Labour and Family Research Institute on October 31.
Equal Pay Day, which falls on Wednesday in Slovakia in 2023, changes every year.
Compared to last year, experts are talking about the widening of the gender pay gap. They point to the coronavirus pandemic and also the inhibition of the growth of wages and bonuses by companies.
When setting the date of Equal Pay Day, the Institute relied on the latest Eurostat data. The gender pay gap in Slovakia in 2021 stood at 16.6 percent against women, a deterioration of 0.8 percent compared to the previously published data. The EU average was 12.73 percent.
Looking at the average gross monthly wages in 2022 published by the Statistics Office, women earned €311 less than men. Men earned €1,654 on average and women €1,343. The difference in monthly wages increased between 2021 and 2022, by 1.1 percent.
