ANOTHER seven Slovaks have received the Righteous Among the Nations award, the highest honour given to non-Jews by the State of Israel and the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum for saving Jewish citizens during the Holocaust.
The awards went to Katarína Pastorková, Filip Martišek and his wife Anna Martišková, Ondrej Hažer and his wife Helena Hažerová, František Svrbický and his wife Gizela.
Ambassador of the State of Israel to the Slovak Republic, Zvi A. Vapni gave the award at the ceremony held in Bratislava on January 25.
“When reading these stories, you have to remind yourself of the time in which they were taking place,” Vapni said in his speech. “Decisions, such as the one taken by the rescuers honoured today, were not mundane and simple decisions.”
Here are their stories.
