MIROSLAV Abelovský, onetime lawyer of Vladimír Mečiar, will run for the post of attorney general. The opposition and even some ruling coalition parties have promised to support him, daily SME wrote.

The ruling coalition is rather reserved in its comments on Abelovský, who meets all the formal criteria to be installed in the post.

The elections for the top prosecution post will be held in December. The parties are expected to nominate their candidates by November 14.

Attorney General Milan Hanzel has confirmed the interest of the former Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) member to run for the post.

HZDS' Sergej Kozlík suggested that his party is not certain whether to support Abelovsky. Mečiar has taken a negative stand on the candidacy of Abelovský.

Hanzel's election term will end in January 2004. He has said he will not run for the office again.

Media speculate that the name of the new attorney general may be known even sooner, because negotiations over who will replace Hanzel may become a part of the ongoing political bargaining between coalition parties on the new boss of the National Security Office.

However, coalition representatives have officially denied that the agreement on the new attorney general is part of a political trade-off.
