ONLY 23 percent of Slovak households were connected to the internet by the end of 2006, according to a survey conducted by the GfK Group. In the survey, the agency focused on internet access and mobile phone and fixed-line use in 11 countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) between 2004 and 2006.
Slovakia ranked seventh in terms of household internet use. The percentage of Slovak households with internet connections grew from 10 percent in 2004 to 23 percent in 2006.
There is still considerable room for growth, however. As many as 64 percent of Austrian households have internet connections, while Slovenia was in second place with 58 percent.
The number of household fixed-line telephones, meanwhile, fell across the CEE region, dropping from 51 percent to 43 percent in Slovakia over the period.
As many as 83 percent of Slovaks in 2006 had a personal mobile phone, tying Slovakia for the lead with Slovenia in this area, followed by Croatia and the Czech Republic.
