MPs from the opposition Progresívne Slovensko party have proposed an amendment to laws governing names in Slovakia that would allow both spouses in a marriage to agree to take a composite surname.
Under current laws, someone getting married can choose to take the surname of their spouse, or can keep their own surname or can take both their surname and their spouse's. But under the new law, both members of the couple would be able to now keep their own surname and take their spouse's surname in a common joint-surname.
"The proposed amendment to the law and related regulations is aimed at eliminating problems and disadvantages resulting from current practice," says the party.
For example, under the current law children can have only one surname. But the amendment proposes they can now have a compound surname comprising their parents' surnames.
