The opposition Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) had a sharp reaction to Prime Minister Fico’s statement on the TA3 news station on August 24 that patronage was a normal part of a political system. It issued a warning that this could stop financial support from EU funds.
Fico said that the ruling coalition can favour its supporters and sponsors when selecting projects to be financed from public funds, as long as the tender meets the set criteria and is approved by the relevant ministry. He also said he was not considering taking action against ministers accused of corruption. SITA
