THE SLOVAK parliament on June 20 rejected an opposition motion of no confidence in Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Pál Csáky.
The motion, brought by the opposition party Smer, was opposed by 57 of the 112 MPs present, while 43 voted for and 12 abstained. Csáky has been criticised for perceived mishandling of the European agenda in Slovakia.
MPs from the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) left the chamber before the vote, claiming the motion had no chance of succeeding. Only their party chairman, former prime minister Vladimír Mečiar, represented them in the debate.
The motion was also backed by the opposition Communist Party and the Caucus of Independent MPs, comprising former HZDS members.
Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš also survived a vote of no confidence on June 20. The motion, initiated by Smer, was supported by 43 of 104 MPs present.
