Former prime minister and leader of the ruling Smer party, Robert Fico, has called Peter Pellegrini its new blood and pinned the hopes of the political future of Smer on him. During his so-far quite sound political career Pellegrini has not been stained by any scandal, but there are some noteworthy moments.

1. The MP who submits amendments

Peter Pellegrini, when serving as a member of parliament for the Smer party between 2006-2010, several times submitted amendments to laws just discussed in parliament not linked to their merits and in this way pursued Smer’s interests in parliament. These legislative changes avoided approval by the cabinet and the regular inter-departmental proceeding.

In 2008, he “smuggled” an amendment into the traffic law changing the law on land expropriation to speed up highway construction on foreign land. Later the Constitutional Court identified this amendment as unconstitutional.
