Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico took part in festivities celebrating the 50th anniversary of signing of Treaty of Rome in Berlin.

At the beginning of celebrations, he attended a gala concert at the Berlin Philharmonic where he was seated next to British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The concert included performances of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, whose final chorus, "Ode to Joy" is the EU’s official anthem.

On March 24 Fico signed the Berlin Declaration with other EU leaders, which remembers past achievements and speaks of the future direction of the EU. The declaration did not contain any reference the planned EU constitution.

Fico said at a press conference the same day that he appreciated the celebrations and noted that Berlin is the right place to commemorate such an anniversary, due to both its ancient and recent history.
