One of the authors named in a disputed bill, which seeks to label non-governmental organisations as entities funded from abroad, is the prime minister’s adviser, who has a history of involvement in the disinformation landscape.
Dalibor Jurášek advises Robert Fico regarding civic society.
Jurášek says that he worked in the IT sector, and even describes himself as an activist. In an interview with the Sme daily, he said that his academic interest was the politicisation of the non-governmental sector. Jurášek previously co-authored an analysis on the financing of political NGOs between 2000 and 2020. Afterwards, he created a website where he shared his findings and talked about them on the Slobodný vysielač disinformation website.
The daily sums up Jurášek’s findings as follows: political non-governmental organisations are not civil because they are not funded by donations from citizens, and since most of the money comes from abroad, they serve foreign interests, primarily American.
“The problem is that they do not represent the interests of the public, but of foreign sponsors,” the adviser opines, adding that by portraying themselves as the representatives of the civil sector, they distort the democratic environment in Slovakia. “Civil society is supposed to represent citizens. It should not serve to reeducate the majority of society according to the ideas of foreign sponsors.”
