After an investigation lasting more than a year, the police still cannot say whether Matej Čurko, who died after being shot in a confrontation with police last May, really was a cannibal or not. The results of the investigation only confirmed that he killed two women, 21-year-old Lucia Uchnárová and 30-year-old Elena Gudjáková, the Sme daily reported.
Čurko made the headlines when an undercover team swooped on an area near Kysak, a village in near Košice, after learning that a local man – who later turned out to be Čurko – was planning to kill and eat a Swiss citizen with whom he made an online pact. The police operation was not a complete success since the suspect was armed and both he and a police officer were seriously injured in the ensuing shoot-out.
Čurko died of his injuries two days later.
However, the police soon discovered that the Swiss citizen was not the only victim of the alleged cannibal. Thanks to a GPS unit used by Čurko they found the graves of two women, said police spokesperson Denisa Baloghová, as quoted by Sme.
Moreover, the police found several numbers similar to geographical coordinates in his computer, but were unable to find bodies at those other locations, Baloghová added.
Čurko’s family still insists that he was innocent, Sme wrote.
