Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič discussed current issues in both countries at their August 26 meeting. Komorowski said that the presidents found the time and occasion to talk about the need to promote shared traditions and values. “I wanted to note that we share a part of the Dunajec [River], and we have two national parks and many sights on both sides of the border to attract tourists,” he said, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
Gašparovič added that the meeting was also about international cooperation and further investment opportunities. “It's not our first meeting where we have addressed issues of mutual cooperation between the regions and we have devoted much of our debate to this area.”
The 2022 Winter Olympics and further possibilities for cooperation were also among the issues discussed by the presidents. “Investments and the possibility of using EU funding towards regional development were the core topics addressed during our talks,” Gašparovič said, adding that they also conversed about the organisation of Poland’s bid to host the Winter Olympics with Slovakia's involvement.
Meanwhile, Komorowski said road infrastructure issues, especially the construction of a highway linking the Slovak town of Žilina and Polish Bielsko, were also discussed. After their talks, the two presidents got on a raft – the mode of transport chosen by the Polish president for his arrival – on the Dunajec River and set off for the Polish village of Szczawnica for lunch.
A Polish-Slovak committee tasked with preparing a bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics reached an agreement last week that the Polish city of Krakow will submit the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, and it counts on the use of Slovakia's ski resort in Jasná (Žilina region) as the venue for organising the alpine disciplines. Krakow is expected to announce its official candidacy on hosting the Winter Olympics, in cooperation with Slovakia, on November 14.
