Thanks to the work of his predecessor, new Justice Minister Gábor Gál has the bar set pretty high, said President Andrej Kiska after meeting with Lucia Žitňanská on March 22.
“I gave her one big thank you,” Kiska said, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “Unfortunately, the trust in the judiciary system is very low. Mrs Žitňanská has done a great job, has adopted several changes and I hope that the new minister, who has set the bar pretty high, will continue in restoring the trust of the people in the judiciary and justice system.”
Žitňanská opines that her successor should complete the project with the experts from the Council of Europe, aimed at creating a more efficient and higher quality judiciary system, She also mentioned the changes to appoint the Constitutional Court justices, updating the requirements for candidates.
Žitňanská will now serve as an MP for Most-Híd. She confirmed she will support the new government of Peter Pellegrini.
“It is necessary to give this government a chance,” she said, as quoted by TASR. “Of course, as an MP I expect the government will reflect the current situation and understand the situation in society. We have squares full of people. If the government manages to do it, it will be good.”
When asked about her message for people demanding early elections rather than changes to the government, she said she understands them.
“I perceive it as a large call to change the ruling method,” Žitňanská said, as quoted by TASR. “I think it is absolutely legitimate and justified, I expect the same from the government.”
