Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radičová (SDKÚ) will take part in a session of the European Council held in Brussels on October 28-29 to discuss changes to the EU's budgetary rules, preparations for the G20 summit on the global economy, the conference on climate change in Cancún (Mexico), and relations with the United States, the TASR newswire reported.
The EU leaders are expected to pass a comprehensive set of recommendations based on a concluding report designed to strengthen economic management within the EU.
"Slovakia supports the decision drafted in the concluding report, because, in our opinion, this would lead to the better co-ordination of EU-member states' economic policies and to the strengthening of the Stability and Growth Pact," said Radičová to TASR.
The PM added that the Slovak Government maintains the opinion championed by the European Commission on introducing automatic sanctions for failures to meet the budgetary rules. However, this system wasn't passed at a meeting of EU finance ministers held in Luxembourg last week. Instead, a compromise agreement was reached that involves introducing a system of gradual sanctions complete with deadlines for taking remedial action.
