THE FIRM that won a tender last year to become the mobile operator in the country, Telefonica O2 Slovakia, could be stripped of its license.

The Bratislava Regional Prosecutor’s Office has challenged the results of the license tender, which the company won in August 2006, arguing that several mistakes were made and laws broken during the tender.

According to the Slovak Television public broadcaster, the prosecutor's actions could lead to the eventual cancellation of the tender.

The Regional Prosecutor’s Office has filed an appeal against the tender decision with the Telecom Bureau (TÚ), which has 30 days to respond. The TÚ insists, however, that the tender was correct, while Transport and Telecoms Minister Ľubomír Vážny sees no problems in the tender either.

Telefonica O2, meanwhile, continues to prepare to launch its own network in Slovakia in February.
