Prime Minister Iveta Radičová is in Brussels to attend a two-day EU summit which will focus on changes to EU budget rules, preparations for the November G20 summit in Seoul on the global economy, and preparations for the climate change conference in Cancún (Mexico) in November-December.
EU leaders are supposed to agree on a comprehensive package of recommendations regarding budget discipline. A recent pact between France and Germany concerning sanctions against fiscally irresponsible countries means that the leaders will also discuss possible changes to the wording of the Lisbon Treaty.
The Slovak government originally supported the idea that sanctions should be applied immediately and automatically. However, agreement on this was not reached at a session of EU finance ministers last week. A mechanism involving the gradual application of sanctions including deadlines for remedial action was approved instead, with Slovakia backing this compromise.
