Re: Government's economic goals largely met, Business shorts, Volume 12, Number 20, May 22 - May 28, 2006

The tremendous results of the government's reforms can only be seen on paper. In ordinary life, the reality is really very cruel. But this power-hungry government keeps that information out of any of its official findings. Try going to eastern Slovakia. Families have been torn apart by unemployment (at least one member of each family has left the country). These families don't have the luxury of appreciating the world's beauties. They must worry about just surviving. I met one woman in Prague who had left her three girls (aged 3, 8 and 13) behind at home because both she and her husband needed to find some way to support them. This system provides no solution for people who want to work but can't find a job. They can easily end up on the street. Slovakia is supposedly the economic lion, but at what price? Is this society also morally and socially developed?
