The outgoing rector of the Trenčín University, Miroslav Mečár, should leave the school entirely and stop discrediting Slovakia's education sector, Ján Bujňák, vice president of the Slovak Rectors’ Conference, told the SITA newswire on February 8.
At their upcoming session in Košice on March 19, rectors will appeal to Mečár to leave the academic community. Bujňák said that rectors want the university to put things in order and observe laws otherwise it should not participate in the Slovak education system, adding that unless it resolves its internal problems its existence will be threatened.
Bujňák admitted tension among rectors. He added that they called upon Mečár to depart at the previous session on January 14. Mečár will leave his rector’s post as of March 1 because of alleged legal violations. But despite these allegations he was elected the dean of the Faculty of Social and Economic Relations by its academic senate.
The Slovak Rectors' Conference considers the election unlawful. The dean is appointed by the rector, which means that Mečár would sign his own letter of appointment.
The resignation of Rector Mečár is linked to a scandal that arose after media wrote about suspicious fast-track diplomas issued by the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences of Trenčín University last October and where an inspection ordered by the Education Ministry revealed several violations of the law.
