Run on cigarettes

Queues formed outside tobacconists yesterday after the government announcement it intended to increase the duty on cigarettes, raising prices by Sk9 (€0.22) per packet.

Some firms have already increased prices to reflect the change, despite the fact that cigarettes currently on sale have been taxed at the current rate.

"We've had to increase prices because our suppliers have raised their prices," said one shopkeeper.

Some shops in Bratislava reported that they limited the number of cartons their customers could buy as stocks began to run low.
