If primary and secondary schools do not receive Sk500 million (€12 million) some may not be able to open in the autumn term, according to the Slovak Association of Towns and Villages (ZMOS), which says this year's increases in fuel costs have left schools unable to pay for heating and lighting.
Michal Sykora of ZMOS blamed the government, saying: "It is necessary to fulfil the letter of the law. School costs must be met by the state."
According to the government, one of the problems is that the local authorities have not rationalised the number of schools in the face of falling student numbers.
