The 17th congress of the Slovak National Party (SNS) held in Ružomberok on September 25 re-elected its long-standing leader, Ján Slota, to the post of party chairman, the TASR newswire reported. Slota received 180 out of 271 votes in the balloting, which was held in public.
“It's a big challenge for me. Of course, I can expect a frenzy of activity from the 'democratic' media. SNS will be more visible after this congress than before. The public has had the feeling that we’re in a depression, but appearances can be deceptive,” said Slota to TASR.
The delegates elected Andrej Danko as the party's first deputy chairman who replaces Anna Belousovová who ran against Slota. Rafael Rafaj, Peter Peťko and Ján Ikrenyi were also elected as vice-chairmen.
“I think that the expectations of a stormy congress didn't pan out. The whole congress took place in a cultured and nice atmosphere. The election was without any problems; the vice-chairs were elected with an overwhelming majority of votes,” said Slota.
