Smer has nominated a candidate for the mayoralty of Žilina, in northern Slovakia, despite an agreement with the Slovak National Party (SNS) that it would support its candidate, SNS chairman Ján Slota told the TASR newswire on Tuesday, September 28.
According to Slota, the SNS signed an official agreement with Smer ahead of the election for the Žilina self-governing region last year that saw the re-election of Smer’s Juraj Blanár. “We clearly supported Mr. Blanár. A document was signed at the time according to which Smer would back an SNS candidate for mayor of Žilina. So we can see here the false character of our [former] coalition partners,” said Slota.
Blanár defended Smer’s actions by saying that the SNS had not proposed any candidate so his party had nominated its own man, former National Highway Company (NDS) director and current Smer MP Igor Choma.
