Fico said the main reason for meeting the Ukrainian PM was the fact that Slovakia will be "with probability close to certainty" become a part of the Schengen Zone on January 1, 2008.

Another topic of the PMs' bilateral talks was cooperation in the energy sector. The government of Slovakia is interested in importing two to four terawatt hours of electric energy from Ukraine over a period of at least 10 years, starting in 2009.

Neither of the two countries has the technical infrastructure for exporting or importing such a volume of electric energy. The Ukrainian PM proposed Slovak participation in constructing and owning the special technological equipment on Ukrainian territory, which would allow the transmission of electric energy to Slovakia and other countries.
