Aconcagua, a 6,969-metre mountain in the Andes in Argentina, has claimed a victim from Slovakia, according to local media.
Slovak mountaineer Peter Knapo, 39, reportedly died last Saturday when he tried to descend the highest summit of the Americas in the La Canaleta area.
“The Slovak climber went out alone on Saturday, February 17, to the summit of Cerro Aconcagua, and until after midnight had not returned to the Nido de Cóndores camp where he had his tent,” said the police rescue patrol, as quoted by clarin.com.
A security ministry in the Mendoza province confirmed the death of the European climber on Sunday, the website adds. It notes that the Slovak decided to climb the peak on his own, calling it ‘unusual’.
Knapo is the fifth victim of the season. It started in November 2023 and ends next month. The previous death occurred on January 30. An American doctor suffered a heart attack. Romanian, American and Russian climbers also died in the mountain range this season.
