New Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas) has been in office just a few days and has already caused a stir. His latest decisions may cost the ministry €700,000.
On Friday, October 27, he suspended several top police investigators who had uncovered that organised crime thrived under the past Smer-led governments.
The Hlas party was founded by Smer renegades in 2020 and is now part of the Smer-led coalition.
However, these investigators received whistleblower status. This means that they cannot lose their jobs without approval from the Office for the Protection of Whistleblowers, a body legally established during the third Smer-led government (2016-2020).

Who is protected
The Office head Zuzana Dlugošová claimed that they did not give the approval, adding that if an employer does so without the consent of the Office, they can be fined up to €100,000 for a protected person.
