"This is how we live here. Our plant is growing in harmony with CO2," SNS MP Rudolf Huliak says in a video after he exhales cigarette smoke into a terrarium.
He adds that he's been doing it for a month.
The video of his experiment appeared on social media thanks to the Slovenská Národná Strana party. According to the lawmaker, he wanted to prove that CO2 does not harm plants but helps them grow.
Plants need CO2. However, no studies show that plants benefit from smoke, the Denník N daily points out.
Last October, the MP argued that CO2 has nothing to do with climate change. On social media, he also accused LGBT+ people of causing climate change.
Moreover, Huliak performed the experiment in his office in parliament, where smoking is prohibited. When a TV reporter told Huliak that smoking isn't allowed in public buildings, the MP asked: "Have you seen an ashtray?" In the video, Huliak is holding a cigar in his hand.
The Office of the National Council has already reminded Huliak "not to carry out experiments based on cigarette smoke" in parliament. The National Council is the official name of the Slovak parliament.
Still, Huliak committed a misdemeanour and could be fined by the Public Health Authority. The Office of the National Council might also receive a fine.
MPs can smoke in the parliament on the balcony near the diner or in front of the entrance.
