Slovak MPs approved a resolution on the future status of the southern Serbian province of Kosovo that states that the future solution must be based on Serbia's legitimate needs as well as on respect for the United Nations Charter and other international legal standards. The declaration was approved on March 28 by 123 out of 150 votes.
Nineteen MPs abstained from voting. Slovakia's legislative body expects the government to try, in cooperation with other members of the EU, to find a solution to the situation in the western Balkans that would include building towards the integration of Western Balkan countries into the union.
Foreign Affairs Minister Ján Kubiš said that Slovakia, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, will be actively involved in further diplomatic talks.
"We will offer suggestions and not wait for someone else to throw them on the table," he said. The minister concluded that the talks should result in a new resolution of the UN Security Council.
