The Union of Slovak Road Transporters (UNAS) announced on the afternoon of January 27 that its truckers will go on strike as of February 1 and that the strike will be in accordance with the Slovak Constitution, the TASR newswire reported. The step is aimed at the re-establishment of acceptable conditions for the transportation sector following the controversial launch of Slovakia’s electronic toll system on January 1 the road carriers say.
UNAS is choosing to communicate only via media, Transport Ministry spokesman Stanislav Jurikovič said in response to the fact that UNAS announced its strike alert.
“Rather than setting up a date for a meeting with us [the Transport Ministry], they have chosen to declare a strike as of Monday. We know nothing about their additional requests. In fact, it's only from media that we learn about them,” said Jurikovič to TASR. He pointed to a letter sent on January 22 to UNAS in which the ministry responded to the demands of the road-carriers, offering to set up a meeting for discussion.
“We’ve received no reply. Now, we learn that the truckers are going on strike,” he said. TASR
