The government acknowledged the information about the preparation of the treaty on December 11.

The new treaty is necessary in order to change the character of the common border between Hungary and Slovakia on the border rivers from moving to a stable border.

“The currently valid character of the moving state border on the bordering rivers causes in practice lengthy legal solutions of the consequences of natural changes of the position of the basin of the bordering rivers,” the document reads, as quoted by the SITA newswire.

The new treaty should also define the border as it was set by European directives.

Expert discussions on the matter began in 2008. Currently, the Slovak side is expecting Hungary to deliver an official stance over the draft treaty.
