Slovakia flooded with daffodils

A FUND-RAISING drive by the League Against Cancer on April 11, which used the daffodil as its symbol, meant that thousands of the yellow floral symbols of solidarity appeared in the streets across Slovakia. The day was even more successful than last year, the Pravda daily wrote.

According to preliminary results, in Bratislava alone volunteers collected Sk300,000 more than last year. According to the head of the League Against Cancer, Eva Kováčová, collections netted Sk5,330,000 in the capital. In Košice, more than Sk1 million were collected. The results from other parts of Slovakia will be known later.

Daffodil Day, now in its 12th year, utilised the services of more than 15,000 volunteers from a wide range of organisations: Slovak Scouting; every type of school, from nurseries to colleges; hospitals; healthcare facilities; hobby clubs and groups; associations of the Slovak Red Cross; and businesses.

Last year, the yield from Daffodil Day was a record Sk20 million.
