SLOVAKIA has kept its ranking of 20th in the Global Peace Index 2008. Iceland is the world's most peaceful nation, followed by Denmark and Norway, according to the study released on May 20.
The Index is a ranking of 140 countries - from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe - listed according to their tranquility, with Sudan, Somalia and Iraq at the bottom.
Slovakia kept the same place as in 2007. This year it received a favourable score for its "low level of organised internal conflict" which measures the intensity of conflict within a country.
Slovakia comes in at 4th place among 24 Central and Eastern European countries.
The Global Peace Index (GPI), now in its second year, is compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit, using a broad range of 24 indicators measuring both the internal and external peacefulness of nations.
