Slovakia will present its candidacy for the Human Rights Council in 2008-11 at the upcoming 62nd United Nations General Assembly in New York, Foreign Affairs Minister Ján Kubiš announced at a press conference on August 27.
According to him, Slovakia is already very active in the field of human rights. Kubiš also said that Slovakia had a natural mandate for such a post, as it had dealt closely with human rights while serving as a non-permanent member on the UN Security Council from 2006-07.
The 62nd UN General Assembly will begin on September 18, 2007. The Slovak delegation will be led by President Ivan Gašparovič, with Kubiš and Slovak ambassador to the UN Peter Burian accompanying him. TASR
