Slovaks and foreigners with permanent residence in Slovakia will vote for mayors and councillors in the municipalities in which they live on Saturday, November 10. Speaker of Parliament Andrej Danko (Slovak National Party/SNS) set the date for the municipal elections on Friday, July 6.
Contrary to a parliamentary election, state citizenship is not a requirement to participate in the municipal election: all permanent residents older than 18, including foreigners, have the right to vote in municipal elections.
During the election, a voter can select only one candidate for the mayoral post. When voting for members of their municipal council, voters should be aware of the number of council seats available. The election is usually one round. Only when two or more candidates for the mayor's post get the same number of votes will a second round be held.
The most closely monitored mayoral election will be in Bratislava, followed by the second biggest town, Košice.
In Bratislava there are already seven candidates for the post. Apart from incumbent Mayor Ivo Nesrovnal these include the architect Matúš Vallo, the Mayor of Bratislava’s Borough of Vajnory, Ján Mrva and ex-RTVS director Václav Mika.
Last election, in November 2014, there were around 4.4 million eligible voters including approximately 61,500 foreigners in Slovakia.
