THE OPPOSITION Smer party signed an agreement with the labor unions’ confederation, KOZ, on December 21, the Pravda daily wrote.
According to the agreement, Smer pledges to push through the unions’ agenda. In turn, KOZ, lead by Ivan Saktor, will support Smer in the parliamentary elections. Later, it may have a say in the nomination of people to various state posts.
The Slovak cabinet, as well as some union members, considers this to be a politicization of the unions. Some politicians even said that by getting involved in politics, the unions lose the justification for their existence.
For Smer leader Robert Fico this alliance is a natural one.
“We are looking for allies to beat the current ruling politics. Everyone is welcome [to join],” Fico said.
Pavol Abrhan, from the ruling Christian Democratic Movement, suspects that KOZ leader Saktor’s political ambitions may be behind the alliance with Smer.
Let’s see what place on Smer’s candidate list [of the party’s nominees for the general elections] Mr Saktor will get,” said Abrhan.
