On December 20, the Sme daily published a front-page article about a new education proposal approved on December 19 that has angered ethnic minorities in Slovakia.
Education Minister Mikolaj, who was nominated by the Slovak National Party (SNS), wants schools for ethnic minorities to give students the option of learning in Slovak as well as Hungarian.
Though it is still unclear how the proposal would affect Hungarian-language education, László Sziget, deputy of the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK), is saying it would force ethnic Hungarian children to learn in Slovak. Mikolaj has denied that allegation. SITA
