The Trenčín Regional Prosecutor's office has launched a legal action against five people for evasion of tax and insurance levies, the TASR newswire was told by the prosecutor's office spokesman Marián Šipavý.
According to Šipavý, the accused individuals – one of whom is the current state secretary (i.e. deputy minister) of the Economy Ministry, Pavol Krištof (a nominee of the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS)) – did not pay taxes and obligatory insurance levies between 1996 and 2000 while they were representatives of several trading companies.
Trenčín Regional Court spokesman Roman Tarabus confirmed that a trial concerning the allegations is set for March 9, 2010. Šipavý stated that the men, who remain free, could face imprisonment of up to 12 years if found guilty. Slovak Economy Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek said he had asked Krištof for an explanation regarding the allegations. TASR
