State to restructure lawyers' fees

The Justice Ministry wants to change the way lawyers are paid, to encourage them to reach settlements earlier, rather than try to drag out legal processes. Under the current system lawyers are paid for each court appearance.

"This means that those who expect their cases to be successful are not interested in whether the case is settled in the first trial," said Jana Pristavková from the Justice Ministry.

The ministry wants to change the motivation for lawyers by basing their fees on the final settlement instead. Similar methods are used in Germany and the Czech Republic.
