THE FINANCIAL situation of Slovak households is gradually improving, according to a survey by the Focus agency of 1,400 respondents in early November.

The survey asked people how they regard the financial situation of their households, and found a positive change at the end of 2006 compared to previous years.

This year, while 51 percent of respondents said that the financial situation of their households had not changed, 25 percent reported an improvement and 23 percent said it was worse.

In 2003 only 7 percent spoke of an improvement, while 60 percent thought that their financial situation had deteriorated.

Since 2003, unemployed people, pensioners, labourers and people with less education have become less critical, as many of their fears of the impact of social and economic reforms have not materialized.
