THREE foreign companies are considering making major investments in Lučenec, the southern city's mayor, Milan Marko, told TASR.
The Lučenec district, in the Banská Bystrica region, has an unemployment rate of about 20 percent against the national average of 14 percent.
The city has signed an agreement of cooperation with an undisclosed British car components producer, confirmed Marko. Subject to a final decision, the company will establish a plant initially employing 300 people, and later a further 700.
Meanwhile, Germany's AB Aktief Bouw and Co is looking to set up an international commodity bourse in Lučenec, including a permanent exhibition area of 7,200 square metres. It would employ around 800 people and provide stands for up to 2,000 foreign firms.
Austria's Baxalt, a maker of artificial basalt fibres, is also interested in Lučenec. It plans to establish one major plant for processing crude basalt and six smaller plants for final production.
Although the town is ready to provide suitable sites, many potential investors are put off by the lack of highway connections, Marko added.
