The evacuation of people living in Trebišov (Košice Region) because of flooding won't now be necessary, as water flowing through a gap in a dam on the Ondava River (only a few kilometres from the town) is not moving toward the town, the TASR newswire reported on May 18.
A breach in the dam, caused by heavy rains and rising water levels, had grown to around 30 metres wide by noon on Tuesday, August 18. But the situation was reported to have stabilised later in the afternoon. Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák travelled to the flood-hit area and took part in a session of the local crisis-management team on Tuesday morning. He gave assurances that around 1,000 metres of portable walls have already been brought in, and added that the authorities were also considering evacuating Nový Majer – a district of Trebišov.
Thanks to all-night work carried out by around 140 soldiers from near-by Michalovce, local people and the fire brigade, the water did not threaten Trebišov directly.
