One of Slovakia’s associations of truckers, ČESMAD, has proposed a more stringent penalty for professional truck drivers who drink and drive in the wake of a recent crash of a Slovak truck in Hungary, the TASR newswire reported.
The reportedly heavily intoxicated driver with a Slovak license plate caused a head-on collision with a Polish truck and then a Czech bus going in the opposite direction near the Hungarian town of Rajka. After impact, the Slovak truck burst into flames. Two people including the driver died and 51 were injured.
"A true professional will never sit behind the wheel of a lorry under the influence. And if they do, they need to lose all rights and privileges, including their license to drive motorised freight vehicles, lorries or buses – for life," ČESMAD president Pavol Jančovič said on Friday, June 24.
Jančovič said the road accident in Hungary on June 20 represents a great warning to all as he considers the information that the truck driver had 4 per mille of alcohol in his blood to be alarming and shocking for "all decent drivers-professionals".
"Something like this should never happen again and it's understandable that we need to react," he told TASR.
