On a weekend when two Americans - Andre Agassi and Serena Williams - took home the singles titles in the US Open, the British Ambassador to Slovakia, David Lyscom, and his wife Nicole salvaged some pride for Britian by winning four trophies at the 6th annual Diplomatic Tennis Tournament in Bratislava September 12. Some 84 competitors participated in the event, including European Commission members, Slovak Foreign Ministry officials, embassy representatives from Iraq, Russia, the US, India and Turkey, and Austrian diplomats commuting from Vienna.

Lyscom and his wife won the greatest number of trophies, followed by Sven Kuhn von Burgsdorff of the EC, who notched his fourth consecutive men's singles title. The tournament was organised by Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Eduard Kukan, who said the goal of the tournament was to "entertain the diplomats." For health reasons, however, Kukan was unable to participate.
