The Union of Slovak Road Transporters (UNAS) has decided to stop its strike due to a nation-wide police intervention against the truck drivers, Jaroslav Polaček from UNAS said in a written statement addressed to media on February 3, as reported by the TASR newswire.
But UNAS said it remains on strike alert and will file a lawsuit over the police intervention, during which many truck drivers had their driving licences revoked and were fined. Furthermore, UNAS said it intends to sue the electronic road-toll provider, SkyToll, over what it calls a dysfunctional toll collection system. The transporters are willing to go all the way to the European Court for Human Rights in Strasbourg they said.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico thanked police on February 2 for keeping the roads passable during the UNAS strike. The union is demanding that only 333 kilometres of first-class roads be tolled - instead of the current 1,500 km. They also request the toll collection to be suspended until this change is introduced. TASR
