SLOVAKS see unemployment and the current economic situation as the country's gravest problems, according to the latest Eurobarometer survey published by the European Commission in Slovakia on January 8.
A total of 44 percent of participants in the survey said they considered joblessness to be one of the greatest problems their country faces, which is 4 percentage points above the EU average. The nation's second biggest problem, according to 36 percent of Slovaks, is the economic situation; this figure is 13 percentage points higher than the EU average.
Apart from the matter of unemployment, the opinions of Slovaks differ significantly from those of people in other European countries, especially on the economic situation, immigration, and terrorism. Only 3 percent of respondents considered immigration to be a major problem for Slovakia, which is 18 percentage points lower than the EU average.
Only 6 percent of Slovaks, or 9 percentage points less than the EU average, consider terrorism a problem.
The survey in Slovakia took place from September 13 to 26, 2006, on a sample of 1,023 respondents.
