The US Ambassador to Slovakia, Theodore Sedgwick, visited János Selye University (UJS) in Komárno on February 16 accompanied by his wife Kate, the TASR newswire reported.
The university’s head of office, Mária Fabó, told TASR that university Rector János Tóth along with several academic officials welcomed the delegation from the US embassy.
“Mr. Ambassador inquired about the foundation and the history of the university and its mission towards satisfying the educational needs of the Hungarian minority in Slovakia. He also asked about the university’s method of financing as well as about the history of the town of Komárno and its surroundings,” Fabó said.
Tóth informed the guests that UJS was the youngest public university in Slovakia and currently the smallest, stating that UJS focuses mainly on instructing teachers for schools using the Hungarian language and preparing company economists and managers as well as clerics for the reformed churches.
The ambassador informed the university representatives about the planned programme for sending Slovak students to US companies to gain professional experience, practical skills and language competency. Later, he also met UJS students. The ambassador complimented the students for their knowledge of English and their communication skills, which were compliments from a native speaker, Fabó told TASR.
