ON JUNE 20, around 1,000 volunteers from 12 European countries started to clean up the damage wreaked by the devastating storm in the High Tatras in November 2004. It is the biggest volunteer project in Slovakia's history, the TASR news agency wrote.
The volunteers will clear the famous Slovak mountains and prepare them for reforestation. They will also repair tourist paths and signs damaged in the storm.
The participants in operation Pomoc pre Tatry (Help for the Tatras) will put in some 50,000 working hours in total.
Apart from Slovaks, the volunteers come from mainly the Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro. Other volunteers are from Belgium, Poland, Romania, France, The Netherlands, Austria, Britain and Italy.
