Slovakia's most successful football coach in recent years, Vladimír Weiss, 43, signed a two-year contract with the Slovak Football Association on July 7 to become head coach of the national team.
Weiss replaces Ján Kocian, who agreed to leave for undisclosed reasons. He will have his contract extended if he manages to take Slovakia to the World Cup in South Africa in 2010. Weiss was coach of Artmedia Petržalka (Bratislava) when the team won the Slovak Corgon League and the Slovak Cup in 2005. It then went on to make its mark in European Champions League, advancing through three qualifying rounds and only just missing out on the last 16 following the group stage.
Weiss also coached Russian club Saturn Moscow Region between February 2006-June 2007, after which he returned to Artmedia. As a player, Weiss represented both Czechoslovakia and Slovakia - 31 times in total. He played for Inter Bratislava, ZTS Inter and Artmedia. TASR
