Slovakia is to have a new leftist party – the Social Democratic Alternative – after Peter Weiss and Brigita Schmognerová, who recently departed the faltering Democratic Left Party (SDĽ), announced their intention to apply for its registry. Education Minister Milan Ftáčnik, Defence Minister Jozef Stank and Finance Minister František Hajnovič, now with the SDĽ, according to the daily newspaper Pravda are weighing joining Weiss’ party.
