Slovakia reacts to Ukrainian elections
SLOVAK politicians see hope in the results of the parliamentary elections in Ukraine. In their optimism, however, they note that much will now depend on the reforms that the new government must pass.
Fico and Merkel discussed crisis in Ukraine
CHANCELLOR of Germany Angela Merkel met President Andrej Kiska, Prime Minister Robert Fico and received an honorary title at Comenius University on October 20. Fico agreed with Merkel that Ukraine needs help.
Gas flows further reduced
SLOVAKIA, as well as other European countries, is reporting a reduction in supplies of Russian natural gas from Ukraine. The current reductions do not pose a threat to gas consumers in Slovakia, and the country says it is prepared for a possible gas crisis. While Russian Gazprom claims that technical issues are behind the lower gas supplies, politicians and analysts also see a political message behind the reduction. In spite of decreased gas supplies, Slovakia has resolved to continue its reverse gas flow to Ukraine.
Slovakia to feel sanctions
RUSSIA responded to recent sanctions, the toughest imposed on the country by European Union and the United States since the Cold War, with a one-year embargo on food imports from the EU, the US, Australia, Canada and Norway on August 7.
