The Slovaks will play their last two qualification matches – against Belarus (October 9) and Luxembourg (October 12). If they manage to win over Belarus in October, they will advance, for the first time in the history of independent Slovakia, to the European Championship taking place in France next year.
The Slovaks so far have won six of their seven matches beating Ukraine (1:0), Spain (2:1), Belarus (3:1), Macedonia (2:0), Luxembourg (3:0), and Macedonia (2:1). They lost to Spain on September 5 (0:2). They are currently placed second in Group C with 19 points, after Spain holding 21 points, while Ukraine has 16 points.
Slovakia ranks 15th overall in the FIFA World Rankings while Ukraine ranks 29th.
